Biography
Tenor Gregory Carroll is known as an emerging artist of exceptional quality. In the 2009/10 season, he received a Career Grant from the Metropolitan Opera, a William O. Cord Memorial Grant from the Wagner Society of Northern California, and was awarded two medals from the Irene Dalis Vocal Competition – second place overall and the Wagner Prize.
Most recently, Mr. Carroll sang Bacchus in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos as a guest of the Seattle Opera Young Artist Program where Seattle Weekly said, “Carroll, especially, is excellent; his tenor has a glorious bloom and sheen to it. . . he sounded spectacular.” The past season also included the workshop of a new/pastiche opera, Jeremy Sams’s Enchanted Island for the Metropolitan Opera; Canio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with Dean Williamson for Spokane Opera where The Spokesman-Review commented that he was “exceptionally well cast;” and a special appearance singing with his mentor, world-renowned soprano Jane Eaglen for the Wagner Society of Northern California.
For the 2010/11 season, Mr. Carroll’s engagements include Rodolfo in Verdi’s Luisa Miller for Puget Sound Opera; Canio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci for Opera Cleveland; Handel’s Messiah with Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; and in Toronto, First Armored Man in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and covering Bacchus in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, both for Canadian Opera Company.
A member of the 2009 Merola Program at San Francisco Opera Center, Mr. Carroll was featured as Erik in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer and scenes of both Walther von Stolzing in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Doctor Caius in Verdi’s Falstaff. One review stated: “He left me wanting nothing more. . . he could hit the stage tomorrow in a Wagner opera and deliver the vocal goods.” Mr. Carroll has travelled Europe five times singing in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, and Hungary for such audiences as John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI at Vatican City. He has performed with most major ensembles in the Northwest U.S. and, in 2006, performed excerpts of Verdi’s La Traviata in Bangkok, Thailand.
Recent concert engagements for Mr. Carroll include Bach’s Magnificat in D with Roupen Shakarian and the Skagit Symphony; Gounod's Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile with Anthony Spain and the Northwest Symphony Orchestra; ‘The Three Cathedral Tenors’ concert with James Savage at Saint James Cathedral; and covering the demanding tenor solos of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ with Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony. His concert repertoire also includes Verdi's Messa da Requiem, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, and Elgar's Dream of Gerontius.
Mr. Carroll previously taught voice at the University of Washington School of Music where he also completed graduate studies. He has performed in masterclasses for Nico Castell, Allan Monk, Gerald Martin Moore, and Carol Vaness, and his former teachers include Vinson Cole and Davida Kagen.
