Biography
Hailed by Opera News for his "beautifully sung . . . sturdy, shining tenor voice that cuts through easily," rising tenor Gregory Carroll sings his European operatic debut in the 2011/12 season as Radamès in Aida at Den Norske Opera after joining the roster of Lyric Opera of Chicago for the same role. He also returns to the role of Canio in Pagliacci for Opera Lyra Ottawa before covering Plácido Domingo at the Metropolitan Opera for the world-premiere of Jeremy Sams’ baroque pastiche, Enchanted Island. In the spring he will sing Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Reno Philharmonic and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony ‘Symphony of a Thousand,’ with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra at the Virginia Arts Festival.
Last season, Carroll reprised the role of Rodolfo in Luisa Miller at Chautauqua Opera for which Opera News said he offered "an impressively solid tenor with nice finish and ring, traveling easily up top." In an extended engagement with Canadian Opera Company he sang First Armored Man in Die Zauberflöte in addition to covering Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos. As Canio in Pagliacci at Opera Cleveland, The Plain Dealer said he displayed a "firm, ringing tenor and keen dramatic instincts" and "a commanding presence from the onset, alternating rapidly between charm and menace."
Other recent engagements include Rodolfo in Luisa Miller for Puget Sound Opera, Canio in Pagliacci at Spokane Opera, and Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos as a guest of the Seattle Opera Young Artist Program where Seattle Weekly said "Carroll, especially, is excellent; his tenor has a glorious bloom and sheen to it . . . he sounded spectacular." As a participant in San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Merola Program he was featured as Erik in Der fliegende Holländer and as Walther von Stolzing in excerpts of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
On the concert stage, the Tacoma News Tribune said Carroll "turned his Wagnerian voice into a plummy Italian tenor, passionately expressive with total confidence in the high register and joyous elaborations" in Handel’s Messiah with the Tacoma Symphony. He has also performed Gounod's Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile with the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Bach’s Magnificat in D with the Skagit Symphony, and was featured in ‘The Three Cathedral Tenors’ – a concert of sacred music at Saint James Cathedral, Seattle. His repertoire also includes Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, and Mahler's Eighth Symphony ‘Symphony of a Thousand,’ for which he covered the demanding tenor solos with the Seattle Symphony. In addition, he has sung numerous concerts in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, and Hungary for such audiences as John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI at Vatican City.
