James Savage


Director of Music at St. James Cathedral, Seattle, since 1981. In addition to the Cathedral choirs and instrumental ensembles, he has conducted various regional orchestras and choruses including the Seattle Symphony and the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, with whom he was featured in Churchill Films' movie, Henry's Tune.

As a Fulbright Research Fellow Dr. Savage studied the music of 18th-century German courts. His doctoral studies were at the Universität Tübingen and the University of Washington. He has been on the steering Committee of the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, which recently named him Pastoral Musician of the Year, 2002. He has taught at the University of Oregon, the German Music Centre, Cornish College of the Arts and, most recently, at the University of Washington. His writings on liturgical music issues have been published in a number of national journals.
