Kathryn Cathcart
pianist / conductor / coach
Kathryn Cathcart is currently music director of the San Francisco Conservatory Opera Workshops and has been a faculty member since 1985. A long-time employee of the San Francisco Opera and Opera Center, she was formerly Director of Musical Studies from 1988-1997, assisting in the selection and artistic supervision of the many young artist training programs, including the Merola Opera Program, Western Opera Theater and the Adler Fellowships. She continues to coach with both the Merola and Adler programs of the San Francisco Opera Center.
Ms. Cathcart has served on the coaching staffs of the Cologne and San Francisco Operas and has conducted in Europe and North and South America. She appears frequently as a vocal recital accompanist and collaborator and headed her own organization, San Francisco Concert Opera, for several seasons, presenting lesser-known works from the operatic repertory in concert form. Cathcart helped launch a revision of the young artists' program of the New National Theatre in Tokyo where she continues to coach and teach, and she teaches and conducts at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy. Cathcart holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Northwestern University.
